Yanagidani Kannon (Yōkokuji Temple) is a historic temple nestled in the mountains of Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto. This ancient temple is known for the sacred spring water called "Dokko-sui," associated with Kobo Daishi, and has been revered since ancient times as a place of prayer for eye ailment healing. The temple is also recognized as the birthplace of "Hana-chōzu" (flower water basins), which became popular on social media.
From November 15 (Saturday) to December 7 (Sunday), 2025, the temple will host its annual "Autumn Leaves Week." During this period, visitors can enjoy the temple grounds adorned with vibrant orange to yellow gradients of autumn foliage and experience the garden's distinctive landscape design. The Jōshoin (upper study hall), once an exclusive tea room for distinguished guests and used for film and commercial shoots, will be specially opened to the public, offering photogenic experiences in this prestigious space.
The Jōshoin is normally only open on the morning of the 17th of each month, but it will be specially accessible during the Autumn Leaves Week. Visitors can capture the beautiful autumn scenery and tea room using "reflector photography" with the mirror-polished desks. The autumn foliage throughout the temple grounds is stunning from every angle, with natural lighting creating depth in the landscape.
Nighttime illuminations will also take place, offering a peaceful experience to enjoy the autumn colors away from crowds in a tranquil atmosphere—perfect for relaxation.
Yanagidani Kannon is conveniently located between Osaka and Kyoto, approximately 10 minutes by car from Nagaokakyo IC. The temple is gaining attention as a "hidden autumn foliage spot" where visitors can avoid the crowds of central Kyoto while enjoying the calm atmosphere unique to a mountain setting.
Exclusive Serenity: Limited to 30 People, Special Private Viewing of Autumn Evenings - 50 Minutes
This year, in addition to regular illuminations, the temple will offer limited private viewings of autumn foliage illumination at two locations: the study hall overlooking the scenic garden and the Jōshoin tea room, which once welcomed distinguished guests. Available by complete reservation only with limited capacity, these premium 50-minute experiences allow up to 30 people per session at ¥10,000 per person, offering exclusive access to the temple grounds after closing hours.
Illumination participants will receive a set of gifts including a limited edition goshuin (temple stamp), omamori (amulet), and other items.
At the Jōshoin, the experience begins with a dharma talk by the head priest, followed by optional photo sessions with a model.
Step away from the hustle and bustle and experience this "hidden Kyoto" where light and darkness intertwine—a moment to clear your mind.
Adorably Charming! Embroidered Goshuincho Featuring That Bird Perched in Autumn Scenery
Among the items available during Autumn Leaves Week, the most notable is the "embroidered goshuincho" (temple stamp book) that beautifully expresses autumn scenery.
This popular item features a new design each year. The newly announced embroidered goshuincho magnificently captures the deepening autumn with rich, colorful embroidery. A chozubachi (water basin) with vibrant maple leaves floating on its surface is depicted in delicate embroidery. Available in three color variations—yellow, red, and brown—each features luxurious, three-dimensional embroidery on warm-toned fabric.
The goshuincho's greatest charm point is the small bird quietly perched there. On a maple branch, two "Shima-enaga" birds—known as "snow fairies"—sit together like a pair. This is derived from the temple's branch in Hokkaido. Their adorable appearance is sure to make you exclaim "Kawaii!" without thinking.
As a commemorative item to treasure beautiful memories, it's perfect as a keepsake for yourself or as a gift for loved ones.
Be sure to get this special, season-limited goshuincho along with your autumn foliage viewing.
