ZEN NIGHT TOFUKUJI, a premium nighttime viewing event held at Tofuku-ji Head Temple of the Rinzai sect in Kyoto's Higashiyama district, is scheduled from May 29 (Friday) to July 5 (Sunday), 2026. The event is co-organized by VIE Inc. and Nikkei Inc.
Drawing on the previous installments at Kennin-ji in Kyoto (2024) and Kenchoji in Kamakura (2025), which together attracted approximately 50,000 visitors with a satisfaction rate of 94.3% and return visit intention of 96.4%, ZEN NIGHT TOFUKUJI brings the series to its next stage at one of Japan's most iconic Zen temples. At the Kennin-ji event, roughly 30% of attendees were international visitors, reflecting the event's broad global appeal.
What is ZEN NIGHT?
ZEN NIGHT is a series of premium nighttime temple events that use sound, light, silence, and nature — all grounded in neuroscience — to offer a "brain-harmonizing" experience in the setting of a historic Zen temple. At ZEN NIGHT TOFUKUJI, the event introduces a new attraction: "Neuro Music Zazen," a meditation experience using EEG (brainwave-measuring) devices that visualize each participant's mental state in real time.
Neuro Music refers to music scientifically designed to amplify or attenuate specific brainwave frequencies, with proven effects on brain activity. Composed to influence both the mind and body, it promotes states such as focus and relaxation.
Tofuku-ji was founded in 1236 and is the head temple of the Tofukuji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Its meditation hall, rebuilt in 1347, is the oldest and largest surviving Zen meditation hall in Japan, and continues to serve as an active place of Zen practice to this day.
Highlights
(1) Tsuten Bridge: Path of Fresh Breeze

From the iconic Tsuten Bridge, visitors can look down upon over 1,000 lush green maples. The gentle rustling of the leaves expresses the movement of the wind in a visual and auditory display. Wrapped in neuro music and the breeze of early summer, the experience engages sight, hearing, and touch in a moment of tranquil harmony.
(2) Hojo Garden "Hakkai": Dance of the Wind Dragon

A vast sea of clouds appears in the illuminated Hojo Garden, with the movement of wind expressed in flowing visual patterns. The chorus of bell crickets blends with neuro music in an ensemble that invites visitors to experience the stillness and harmony of the season through sight and sound.
(3) Hatto Hall: Shakyamuni Buddha Statue & Azure Dragon Painting

Exclusive to this premium nighttime viewing, the solemn figure of the principal image — the Standing Shakyamuni Buddha — and a monumental Azure Dragon ceiling painting emerge dramatically from the darkness.
(4) Zendo: Neuro Music Zazen

Inside Japan's oldest and largest Zen meditation hall, visitors can participate in a meditative experience like no other. Wearing EEG devices, participants can see their own brain state visualized in real time through sound and projected visuals. Surrounded by digital patterns and brainwave-derived audio, this space offers a deep dive into relaxation and self-reflection.
