Round, upright, and a little vacant-looking. Marmots rise onto their hind legs with soft, doughy bodies, huddle close to their companions, and sometimes wear an expression that gives nothing away.
On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Kichijoji in Tokyo will welcome the grand opening of Art Lounge TSUBOMI, a new space dedicated to permanently displaying marmot-themed artwork.
More than 30 marmot-themed pieces, mainly paintings and illustrations, fill the space. Visitors can encounter marmots as seen through each artist's own perspective — not just their adorable looks, but their absent-minded expressions, individual quirks, and the bonds between companions.
Ahead of the grand opening, the space will be previewed to the general public for three days, from Saturday, August 1 to Monday, August 3, 2026. No reservation is needed for the 2nd floor, and admission there is free as an opening celebration through Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
As an opening program, the venue is also holding Mamoterrace Festa, bringing together 13 creators whose combined social media following tops 800,000. Original artwork the creators made around the theme "Marmots and Love" will be displayed on the 2nd floor, while original merchandise goes on sale on the 1st floor.

A Permanent Exhibition With More Than 30 Works, All Eyes on Marmots
Art Lounge TSUBOMI is an art lounge where visitors can enjoy marmot-themed artwork on an ongoing basis.
Even though every piece takes marmots as its subject, the styles vary widely — from works that lovingly render their round bodies, to ones that capture their utterly relaxed expressions, to others that focus on how they huddle close to their companions.
Through the works of multiple creators, the exhibition offers fresh discoveries — moments of "so marmots can look like this, too" and "there's this much life and reality behind that cute exterior."
No specialized knowledge of art is required.
"I like this expression."
"Something about this one catches my eye."
"I want to see more from this artist."
Starting from feelings like these, the lounge aims to be a place where visitors can find their own favorites.

Popular Creators With a Combined 800,000+ Followers Express "Marmots and Love"
The opening program, Mamoterrace Festa, brings together 13 creators in total, including several who have built large followings mainly through social media.
The theme for this occasion is "Marmots and Love."
Each creator expresses their own take on "Marmots and Love" as an original piece — the affection inspired by a marmot's round shape and expressions, the sight of companions huddled together, and their own feelings toward marmots as creatures.
2nd Floor: Original Artwork From 13 Creators on Display
On the 2nd floor, Art Lounge TSUBOMI displays original artwork created around the theme "Marmots and Love."
The original artworks themselves are not for sale; they are meant to be viewed and appreciated at leisure as exhibits.
1st Floor: Original Merchandise and Canvas Art for Sale
On the 1st floor, original merchandise from the participating creators is available for purchase.
Canvas art inspired by the pieces on display on the 2nd floor is also offered. After viewing the original artworks, visitors can take home a piece of their favorite creator's world as merchandise.
The event aims to give visitors an encounter with the artwork that leads them to discover the creators behind it and, ideally, to start supporting their work.

By Day, a Permanent Art Exhibition; By Night, a Members-Only Lounge
During the day, the space operates as an art lounge where anyone can casually enjoy the marmot artwork.
From 6:00 PM onward, it transforms into a members-only lounge where guests can enjoy drinks and conversation surrounded by the artwork.
Spend the day quietly taking in the artwork alone, then talk it over with friends at night — the ability to enjoy the space differently depending on the time of day is one of Art Lounge TSUBOMI's defining features.
Note: Details on how to use the members-only lounge and its operating details will be announced in stages on the official website and official social media accounts.
Note: The 2nd-floor Art Lounge TSUBOMI's membership service operates only after the 3rd-floor Marmot Village Tokyo, Kichijoji's opening hours end for the day.

Art, a Café, and Real Marmots — All Across Three Floors
Art Lounge TSUBOMI occupies the 2nd floor of Mamoterrace, a three-story marmot-themed complex.
The 1st floor houses MaMo Café, a goods-and-café space jointly run by TSUBOMI Inc. and Marmot Co., Ltd.
Visitors can enjoy items like Mamochi Pudding, a three-dimensional rendering of the round body and sleepy expression of the marmot mascot Mamochi, along with marmot-motif meals, drinks, and original merchandise.
The same building's 3rd floor is home to Marmot Village Tokyo, Kichijoji, a fully reservation-based, capacity-limited space where visitors can watch real, living marmots from an appropriate distance.
Take in the marmots as expressed by creators on the 2nd floor, enjoy sweets and merchandise on the 1st floor, and — for those with a reservation — meet the real thing's expressions and gestures on the 3rd floor.
Art, café treats, and an encounter with real marmots can all be enjoyed within a single building.
Note that live marmots are housed only on the 3rd floor. There are no marmots at the 1st-floor MaMo Café or the 2nd-floor Art Lounge TSUBOMI.

Comment from TSUBOMI Inc.
Marmots have an appeal that goes beyond cuteness alone — from their round bodies and utterly relaxed expressions to their ecology, individual personalities, relationships with companions, and even their current situation overseas.
We hope visitors can encounter the artwork and its creators through feelings like "I like this expression" or "this piece catches my eye," even without any background in art.
We aim to grow this into a place where marmots serve as a starting point for feeling closer to art and discovering new works and artists.
