Calbee Co., Ltd. will release the new limited-edition flavor "Kataage Potato Oyster Butter Flavor" from its popular "Kataage Potato" potato chip brand starting November 10, 2025. The product will first be available at convenience stores nationwide, followed by other retail outlets from November 17, 2025 (scheduled to end sales in mid-June 2026).
Background
"Kataage Potato" is a potato chip brand developed using the traditional kettle-cooked manufacturing method said to have originated in the United States in the mid-19th century. First launched in Hokkaido on November 8, 1993, the brand gradually expanded its sales area and became available nationwide in 2005. Now celebrating over 30 years since its debut, it has become a long-selling brand.
By slowly and carefully frying thickly sliced potatoes, the brand is beloved by many for its crunchy texture and the potato flavor that intensifies with each bite. In addition to standard products such as "Light Salt," "Black Pepper," and "Grilled Nori," various limited-edition flavors have been released.
The "Kataage Potato Oyster Butter Flavor" was born from a call for "flavors you want to eat on autumn evenings" in the "Kataage Potato Support Club," a fan community. It was selected from approximately 1,300 ideas including "Shiso Miso Flavor" and "Smoked Cheese Flavor." The package design was created based on a drawing by a club member, with three designs put to a final vote. During development, fan meetings were also held, and improvements were made while incorporating everyone's opinions. This product, conceived and decided by the "Kataage Potato Support Club," is a flavor with the stamp of approval from "Kataage Potato" fans.
