At the foot of Mount Fuji, on the shore of Lake Tanuki in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, Kyukamura Fuji offers a rare chance to see "Diamond Fuji" — the moment sunrise lines up exactly with the summit of Mount Fuji. The phenomenon happens only twice a year, in April and August, and this month's best window falls during the early mornings of the week starting August 20. When conditions align, Mount Fuji's reflection also appears on the surface of Lake Tanuki, producing the rarer "Double Diamond Fuji," a sight captured here at 6:11 AM on August 22, 2023, along the lake's promenade.
Mount Fuji Views From Every Corner of the Hotel
Every guest room at Kyukamura Fuji has a view of Mount Fuji, with the window frame setting off the mountain like a picture, so guests can take in the Diamond Fuji scenery in private. Inside the hotel, Mount Fuji is also visible from the restaurant and the large communal hot spring bath, keeping the mountain in view no matter where guests are.
For an even more dramatic view, the "Fugaku Terrace" on the Lake Tanuki shoreline in front of the hotel is worth a visit. The Lake Tanuki promenade beside the terrace lets visitors stroll while watching Mount Fuji's expression shift little by little. In the clear morning air, the instant the sun rises from the summit and shines like a diamond is a breathtaking sight.
A Buffet Filled With Mount Fuji's Blessings
The buffet features sushi and sashimi made with seafood delivered straight from Numazu Port, alongside colorful local Shizuoka vegetables. At the open kitchen, chefs prepare nigiri sushi and tempura on the spot, adding a seasonal touch to the spread.
Standout dishes include locally sourced Fujinomiya trout, "Beni-Fuji" nigiri, and the "Suruga-don" rice bowl topped with Shizuoka's own raw sakura shrimp and shirasu (baby sardines).
