A stay plan built around better sleep is coming to one of Tohoku's oldest hot spring retreats. From September 21 (Mon, national holiday) through October 31 (Sat), 2026, Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, run by GETO Village Co., Ltd., is offering Nemuri no Toji (眠りの湯治), a limited-time plan featuring guest rooms outfitted with bedding supplied by GOKUMIN, the comprehensive bedding brand from Tokyo-based KURUKURU Co., Ltd.
A Hot Spring Retreat Snowed In for Half the Year
Geto Onsen is a hot spring area in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, said to have opened in the year 856. Located at an elevation of about 700 meters along a gorge in the Ou Mountains and surrounded by old-growth beech forest, it is designated as a national health resort area. Records from an Edo-period hot spring ranking list it at the very top for eastern Japan, making it one of Tohoku's leading toji (hot spring cure) retreats.
Snow closes the roads in winter and makes the area inaccessible even on foot, so the hotel typically operates for about half the year, from May through the end of October.
Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel is run by GETO Village Co., Ltd., founded in January 2025 with the mission of carrying hot spring and toji culture into the future. The company notes that while Tohoku has about 570 hot springs, a dozen or so hot spring inns close every year due to aging owners and a lack of successors, and Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel, which the company took over, was also caught up in this trend. Through reviving toji inns like this one, the company is building bases that support well-being in both how people live and how they work.
Why GOKUMIN Got Involved
As a Japanese bedding brand, GOKUMIN was drawn to GETO Village's vision of carrying toji culture into the future, leading to this collaboration.
Out of it came the special stay plan, Nemuri no Toji (眠りの湯治) — guest rooms outfitted with GOKUMIN bedding and other sleep-focused items, offered as a special plan distinct from a regular stay at the hotel.
Toji is a long-standing Japanese practice of restoring mind and body through bathing and sleep. While the quality of the hot spring water and how guests spend their stay have long been discussed, the bedding that supports that sleep has rarely drawn attention. Focusing on this gap, GOKUMIN is providing bedding suited to the environment of a toji inn at Geto Onsen, adding a new layer of value to sleep tourism.
Bedding Selected for Geto Onsen
Guest rooms on the Nemuri no Toji plan are furnished with the fiber-material リライブファイバーマットレス and AMUファイバーピロージェルカバータイプ, along with the temperature-regulating 調温コントロール掛け布団.
Geto Onsen has a "yumeguri" culture of moving between multiple baths, so guests are expected to bathe several times during their stay. A body fresh from the bath retains heat, and when that heat and moisture build up in bedding, it raises the temperature and humidity inside the bed. Because the fiber material has a three-dimensional structure that does not absorb moisture, it is well suited to releasing heat and humidity.
The high-elevation mountain setting also means the perceived temperature shifts significantly over the plan's run from September into late October. For the comforter, GOKUMIN chose the 調温コントロール掛け布団, which uses temperature-regulating cotton as fill, to prepare for the changing conditions inside the bed as the seasons turn.
The hotel closes and sits empty under snow for about half the year, starting in November. During that time, the installed bedding remains in a cold, humid environment, but since every piece can be fully washed, it can be cleaned and put back into ready-to-use condition once the hotel reopens after winter.
The Bedding
リライブファイバーマットレス (fiber mattress)
A 9 cm-thick mattress made with about 1 million strands of specialized fiber. Its tri-fold, two-layer construction is divided into six interchangeable pieces, so parts that wear down faster can be rotated to extend the mattress's life. Both the cover and the fill can be fully washed, and the highly breathable structure helps keep sweat and moisture from building up.

AMUファイバーピロージェルカバータイプ (fiber pillow, gel cover type)
A pillow made with moisture-resistant fiber material in a three-dimensional structure. Its breathability keeps the head from feeling stuffy even right after a bath. A grid of three-by-three zones with varying density fits different sleeping postures, and the included adjustment sheet allows for 8 levels of height adjustment. Like the mattress, both the cover and the fill can be fully washed.

調温コントロール掛け布団 (temperature-regulating comforter)
A comforter usable year-round, filled with a special blend (50% temperature-regulating cotton, 50% ultra-fine microfiber cotton) containing temperature-regulating microcapsules. It was chosen to match the mountain guest rooms, where temperatures swing widely between the cool of September and the chill of late October. The outer fabric is high-density processed and antibacterial-treated, and the comforter can be fully washed.
