New Photography Book Collects 500 of Japan's Most Scenic Landscapes, Sorted by Theme

Breathtaking landscapes found nowhere else spread across every region of Japan. A new photography book, 『日本の絶景500 テーマ別風景写真』, brings together a wide variety of Japan's natural scenery across the seasons, sorted by photographic theme (subject). Of the many possible subjects, the book narrows its focus to nine: water, sea, flowers and autumn leaves, land, mountains, greenery, farmland, hometown scenery, and natural phenomena. A closing column also features a selection of striking rock formations.

The "Water" theme covers rivers, lakes, and other bodies of fresh water, while "Sea" gathers views of the open saltwater expanse. "Flowers and Autumn Leaves" showcases the flowering scenes that color Japan's four seasons, and "Mountains" presents towering landforms and the regions where they cluster together, rounding out the collection's more classic themes. Beyond these, "Land" evokes the sense of vast open space found in highlands, wetlands, dunes, and plains; "Greenery" focuses on forests and giant trees among Japan's plant life; and "Farmland" gathers uniquely Japanese agricultural scenes such as rice paddies, terraced fields, and other cultivated land. "Hometown" collects old-fashioned village scenery like mountain hamlets, views that evoke one's birthplace, and scenic shots of local railways, while "Natural Phenomena" captures fleeting moments of beauty within nature itself, from fog and ice to clouds, rainbows, and rays of light. Selected purely on the basis of their beauty as landscape photography, the book's 500 chosen images offer readers a chance to fully savor Japan's scenery to their heart's content.
