Matcha cafe brand MATCHA MEIJIN Cafe, operated by Marusan Co., Ltd. (株式会社丸三), opened a new flagship location in Asakusa, Tokyo, on Thursday, August 6, 2026. MATCHA MEIJIN Cafe Asakusa uses carefully selected matcha prized for its aroma, flavor, and color, served in a two-story space next to Sensoji Temple's Nitenmon Gate.
Why Asakusa Was Chosen for the New Flagship Store
MATCHA MEIJIN Cafe has built a following among visitors from Japan and abroad through its matcha experience programs in Asakusa and its cafe in Ginza, which opened in January 2026. Asakusa, a world-renowned tourist destination, was chosen as the site for the brand's new flagship store, with the goal of sharing the appeal of authentic matcha with more visitors in a refined space where they can pause and unwind.
A Two-Story Space With Two Different Atmospheres
Taking advantage of its special location next to Sensoji Temple's Nitenmon Gate, the store is built around the concept of "quiet, refined matcha time before or after visiting Sensoji Temple." Beyond simply serving matcha and Japanese sweets, the store lets guests experience Japanese aesthetics through its refined interior and the staff's careful movements. To bring this experience to life, the store is split across two floors, each with its own distinct atmosphere.
First Floor: A Modern Cafe for Casual Visits
The interior, built around natural materials, combines a calm atmosphere with modern design. The plastered counter at the back of the floor, which anchors the space, is finished in a soft gray-green reminiscent of matcha and moss, hand-shaped by artisans into soft, rounded contours. Behind it, a bronze-toned wall evokes the weathered depth of aged temple copper, catching the light quietly from different angles and creating a calm space that lets guests forget the bustle of Asakusa outside.

Second Floor: A Hands-On Matcha Experience
The second floor houses a genuine four-and-a-half-tatami-mat tea room, where guests can take part in a hands-on program to whisk their own matcha in a calm, quiet setting. After watching an up-close demonstration by an experienced tea ceremony practitioner, guests try a tray-style tea ceremony (bon-temae) themselves, whisking matcha with a bamboo whisk. A matcha-tasting experience is also offered, comparing three types of matcha that differ in aroma, sweetness, and depth of flavor so guests can find their favorite. The program is fully supported in English, so visitors from overseas and inbound group tours can take part without a language barrier.

Matcha Menu Highlights
The menu makes generous use of domestic matcha selected for its aroma, flavor, and color.
Matcha Latte
Made using only freshly whisked matcha, this cup highlights matcha's deep aroma alongside the mellow sweetness of milk.

Matcha Pancakes
The cafe's signature sweet, cooked to order for a fluffy, tender texture. The dish balances matcha's refined bitterness with a gentle sweetness.

Matcha Taiyaki
Baked until crisp and fragrant, each bite carries matcha's elegant aroma and rich flavor, making it a good choice for eating on the go or taking home as a gift.
