From September 9 (Wed) to 16 (Wed), 2026, Kuriya Shichidaime Matsugoro — run by Shabu Shabu Matsugoro Co., Ltd. of Shibuya, Tokyo — is bringing its Cuban sandwich to Sogo Yokohama's 8th-floor event space for the department store's first-ever SOGO BREAD Market, a pop-up dedicated to bread and sweets, where the sandwich will be pressed and sold fresh on-site.
It was the restaurant's first time exhibiting at a department store event when it joined the 10th 47 Prefectures Japan Gourmet Show at Tobu Department Store's Ikebukuro flagship from August 25 to September 1 — yet it still sold 2,500 Cuban sandwiches over the 8-day run.
Now the sandwich that so many customers enjoyed there is heading to Yokohama.

A Cuban Sandwich Built to Faithfully Recreate the Movie Chef
Matsugoro's Cuban sandwich traces its origin to the film Chef (released in Japan as Shefu: Mitsuboshi Food Truck Hajimemashita).
Head chef Toshiki Fujii was captivated by the Cuban sandwich that appears in the film and set out to actually taste one like it, developing the recipe through repeated research and testing.
The roast pork alone takes about a week to prepare, from marinating and steeping in mojo sauce to roasting and resting. It's layered with ham, Gruyère cheese, and pickles inside a carefully chosen baguette, then pressed to order and toasted until fragrant.

A Dish Loved by Gentosha President Toru Kenjo
One person who has taken a particular liking to this Cuban sandwich is Toru Kenjo, representative director and president of Gentosha.
Together with Kenjo, the restaurant has held Cuban Sandwich Night, an event centered on the dishes from Chef, five times so far. In November 2025, Matsugoro's Cuban sandwich was also featured on TBS's Jinsei Saiko Resutoran (Life's Best Restaurant), a program Kenjo appeared on.

On his social media account on 755, Kenjo described Fujii's Cuban sandwich as:
"Absurdly delicious."
During the event at Tobu Department Store, Kenjo himself visited the venue and stood at the sales counter to help cheer on the sandwich.
