Michi-no-Eki "Umi no Kyoto Miyazu" Reopens October 1 With a Refreshed Market Floor and a New "White" Seafood Hitsumabushi

Michi-no-Eki "Umi no Kyoto Miyazu" (道の駅「海の京都 宮津」), the roadside station in Miyazu, Kyoto Prefecture, reopens after a renewal on October 1 (Thursday), 2026.

Official website: https://michinoeki-miyazu.jp/

Since its grand opening in 2017, the station has been a familiar hub connecting visitors with the local community, with the "Magokoro Ichi" (まごころ市) market selling products from local producers, a tourist information center, and dining facilities. Since April 2026, it has been run by Kyoto Tango Kikaku Co., Ltd. (株式会社京都丹後企画) as the designated manager of the station, which was established by Miyazu City.

In recent years, the number of visitors to Miyazu has been on the rise and travel styles have broadened. The growth has also brought new challenges, such as a shortage of places to eat in the evening during busy seasons and the question of how to protect and expand the places where local makers can sell their products.

The renewal puts the station's long-standing focus on local products and food front and center once again. The Magokoro Ichi sales floor has been refreshed, and the eatery "Minato Shokudo Shiosai" (みなと食堂 しおさい) adds new dishes led by a "white" seafood hitsumabushi that draws on Miyazu's identity as a port town. The aim is a dining hall that works both as a travel treat and as an everyday meal spot for locals.

From visitors and local residents to the makers of Miyazu and Tango, the station aims to become a place where everyone connects with the region, creating new flows of people and a place to encounter the area's appeal.

Background to the Renewal

1. 3.131 million visitors, 104.2% of the previous year: more people are visiting Miyazu

Travel to the area is no longer only about heading to Amanohashidate. More people are touring Tango and enjoying its distinctive food, products, and local character.

According to Miyazu City's 2025 tourist arrivals survey results (published April 9, 2026), Miyazu welcomed 3.131 million visitors in 2025, up 125,000 from 3.006 million in 2024, or 104.2% of the previous year's figure. The number of overnight guests also rose, to 920,000 from 829,000 the year before.

As more people visit Miyazu, the roadside station is expected to be more than a place to simply stop by. It is also meant to be a chance to encounter the appeal of Miyazu and Tango and a starting point for exploring the region.

2. Few places to eat at night, and few lasting outlets for makers

As new flows of visitors emerge, new challenges have also become visible for the region.

In Miyazu, places to have dinner are limited, especially in busy seasons, and there are not enough options for visitors who want to spend the evening in the area. With this renewal, evening dining service begins during part of the busy periods, extending the hours visitors can spend at the station. At the same time, while the area has makers of appealing agricultural products, seafood, and processed goods, it is also important to keep sustaining places that bring their products to visitors from outside the region.

"Even with people who make things, their livelihoods cannot continue unless the places to sell them continue."

The station's role was reconsidered as a place where local makers, visitors, and residents connect through food and products. The renewal revisits the sales floor and the eatery, once again centered on local products and food.

3. The station as an "entrance," bringing visitors around the whole region

Kyoto Tango Kikaku runs lodging and restaurants in the Miyazu and Tango area in addition to Michi-no-Eki "Umi no Kyoto Miyazu."

The idea is not to draw people to a single facility, but to use the station as an entrance from which visitors move on to the town, to lodging, and to other parts of the region. The operator sees this as a role it can play because it runs multiple facilities in Miyazu and Tango.

Rather than keeping the flow of people within one facility, the renewal aims to spread it across the whole region, raising the value of the station itself while creating new flows of people around Miyazu and Tango.

Renewal Highlights

1. Buy: Magokoro Ichi becomes a sales floor where the makers' faces show

The Magokoro Ichi sales floor, where local produce, seafood, and processed goods from Miyazu and Tango makers line the shelves, has been refreshed.

Product placement and fixtures were reviewed to make recommended and seasonal items easier to pick up, and there are more POP signs introducing each vegetable's characteristics and suggested ways to eat it. With a new noren curtain, new signage, and warm lighting, the floor aims to convey not only "what is being sold" but also "who makes it, and where."

2. Eat: Minato Shokudo Shiosai brings Miyazu's food closer to everyday life

The

"Minato Shokudo Shiosai" renews the dining space that was long known as "Hamakaze Cafe" (ハマカゼカフェ). Its new signature dish is a "white" seafood hitsumabushi made with Miyazu white-fleshed fish. Condiments in small bowls and a dashi soup let diners change the flavor as they eat, so the dish tastes different all the way to the last bite.

The menu has also grown with dishes that make use of local ingredients, including Miyazu's specialty curry yakisoba, pasta, and hamburgers. The eatery also serves the craft beer "ASOBI BEER," brewed from "Yosano Hops" (与謝野ホップ) grown in neighboring Yosano Town, on four draft taps. The "Amanohashidate Lemon Sour" (天橋立レモンサワー), made with Miyazu-grown lemons and brewing know-how, joins the lineup as well, to be enjoyed alongside the food of Miyazu and Tango.

The eatery also plans evening service, mainly during busy periods, gradually stretching the time visitors can spend in Miyazu from daytime into the evening. It aims to be an eatery that fits into everyday life in Miyazu, for travelers' meals and for locals who want to drop in casually.

The interior has been renewed with a vivid blue accent that suits "Umi no Kyoto." With window-facing counter seats, café-style bench seating, and a large high table that a big group can gather around, the greater variety of seating aims to create a relaxed, casual atmosphere like a café or eatery, easy to drop into for sightseers and locals alike.
