Misasa Yogurt in Tottori Releases Seasonal Persimmon and Hojicha Yogurt

Misasa Yogurt (三朝ヨーグルト), a yogurt specialty shop in Misasa, Tottori Prefecture, has released "Persimmon and Hojicha Yogurt" (柿とほうじ茶ヨーグルト). The seasonal item combines the sweet persimmon "輝太郎", a Tottori-original variety grown at Fukui Kajuen (福井果樹園) in Kurayoshi, with hojicha (roasted green tea) from Inoue Seikien (井上青輝園) in Daisen. It has been on sale at the shop since Saturday, October 17, and can also be bought at the official online shop.

This is the first time Misasa Yogurt has used 輝太郎 persimmons. The yogurt is a seasonal product timed to the 輝太郎 harvest, and sales will end once the persimmons purchased for it run out.

Features of the Yogurt

  • A house-made persimmon jam: 輝太郎 persimmons are peeled and chopped one by one at the shop, then cooked with beet sugar
  • A hojicha jelly made with tea from Inoue Seikien, which grows and processes its own tea in Daisen Town. The tea is roasted over high heat for a fragrant, clean taste and brewed with the lid on to lock in the aroma
  • Two kinds of yogurt: unsweetened drinking yogurt and a rich strained yogurt with the moisture carefully drained off
  • No added flavorings or colorings

The gentle sweetness of the persimmon is followed by the toasty aroma of the hojicha, making this a cup for autumn.

The Producer: Fukui Kajuen in Kurayoshi, Tottori

Fukui Kajuen began in 1960 (Showa 35), when the first-generation owner, 福井修身, planted Nijisseiki (20th Century) pears. Centered on pears, the orchard has operated for more than 66 years and is now run by three generations of the family. It started growing persimmons and peaches in the 2010s, drawing on the skills it had developed with pears.

The second-generation owner, 福井周二, graduated from the Faculty of Horticulture at Chiba University and then worked in quality control and other roles at a food manufacturer. He returned to his hometown in 2022 and began farming at his family's orchard in 2023. The third generation, 涼花, joined as a new graduate in 2026 and helps out at the orchard, including handling its social media.

Fukui Kajuen works organic fertilizer into the soil so that it takes effect slowly and the fruit ripens gradually. It also farms with the environment in mind, using bamboo supports to reduce plastic and recycling pruned branches into wood chips. On the day of the Misasa Yogurt team's visit, the people at the orchard tasted a prototype and said, "I never thought persimmon and hojicha would go so well together."

Comment from the Store Manager

Misasa Yogurt store manager 成瀬望 shared the following comment.

Even among persimmons raised with great care, about 60% have split skin or insect damage and can no longer be sold at the regular price. I was shocked to hear this at the orchard. Even so, the sight of each persimmon being carefully polished by hand and shipped left a strong impression on me. The two of them had lived in the city for a long time, but they seemed to be enjoying life in Tottori, including visiting restaurants. By turning these persimmons into yogurt and delivering it to customers, I hope Misasa Yogurt can grow together with Fukui Kajuen.
