MUDANI Uru Opens in Shimogyo, Kyoto With Two Machiya Private Rentals Centered on a Garden and Bath

MUDANI Uru (潤), a private-rental stay made up of two attached Kyoto machiya townhouses, opened on November 1, 2026 (Sunday) in Takeyamachi, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is operated by MUDANI Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City).

MUDANI Uru is one of the properties under "MUDANI Sigunature," the company's top-tier brand, which offers refined service and playful accommodation experiences.

The renovated Kyoto machiya are split into two houses, NORTH and SOUTH. Each has a wide garden between the main house and the annex, and each annex holds a bath facing the garden. Soaking in the bath, savoring tea, sitting in zazen while looking at the garden, and resting in a favorite scent make up the stay, turning a few days in Kyoto into time to refresh body and mind.

A Stay Built Around the Garden and Bath

The name "MUDANI Uru" was inspired by the bath and the garden, which take center stage during the stay.

After arriving, guests relax in the main house, then cross the garden to the bath in the annex. After a long soak to warm the body, they can replenish fluids by comparing several kinds of tea and herbal tea.

MUDANI Uru

Spending unhurried time looking at the garden is meant to help guests regain the room to face themselves and the people close to them, something that is often put off amid the rush of daily life.

At night, guests can choose a pillow mist in a favorite scent before going to sleep. Warming the body from the outside, filling it from within and ending the day with a scent is intended to refresh body and mind without strain.

MUDANI Uru NORTH | Aged Materials and Deep Shadows

NORTH keeps the machiya's old timber and earthen walls in their aged texture. Modern materials such as mortar and iron are combined with them, and the dimly lit interior creates deep shadows.

MUDANI Uru NORTH

The annex bath is enclosed by glass doors on three sides, and from the tub guests can take in the whole garden, colored by moss and seasonal trees. With all the doors open, the garden feels closer, along with the outside air.

After the bath, guests can rest on a sofa that opens toward the garden. They can brew tea and spend time looking at the garden until the body's heat fades.

MUDANI Uru NORTH

NORTH is recommended for guests who want to quietly regain themselves among materials and shadows shaped by a long span of time. They can reflect on their own thoughts and feelings alone while gazing at the garden, or sit side by side with a loved one, looking in the same direction and talking about what comes next.

MUDANI Uru SOUTH | Warmth of Wood and Ryokan-Like Calm

SOUTH keeps the machiya's framework while making generous use of newly added wood such as hinoki cypress and cedar, giving the house a warm feel. Together with tatami mats and earthen walls, the space has a calm, ryokan-like atmosphere.

MUDANI Uru SOUTH

The annex bath is surrounded by a bright wooden ceiling and cedar-bark walls, and the garden gravel continues right up to the base of the hinoki tub. With the front opened, the garden colored by seasonal trees is just outside. Guests can soak slowly while taking in the outside air and the scent of wood.

After the bath, guests can move to the engawa (veranda) facing the garden, sit in zazen on a cattail cushion while looking at the garden, and spend time doing nothing in particular. It is a peaceful moment that comes precisely because one is traveling. SOUTH is recommended for guests who want to relax, wrapped in the scent and warmth of wood.

MUDANI Uru SOUTH

Two Attached Houses, Each Rented as a Whole

MUDANI Uru rents each of the two adjacent houses as a whole. NORTH and SOUTH each accommodate up to seven guests.

NORTH suits guests who want to spend quiet time amid the texture of old timber and earthen walls and deep shadows. SOUTH suits guests who want to relax in the scent and warmth of hinoki and cedar.

Guests can choose the house that fits the purpose of their trip and the way they want to spend their time.
