A new lodging option is arriving in Hakodate, Hokkaido. NEXUS HOTEL Hakodate, a whole-building rental accommodation converted from a former convenience store, will begin accepting reservations on May 22, 2026. Located at 23-1 Horai-cho, Hakodate, the property accommodates up to 12 guests and is operated by Matsumoto Sangyo Co., Ltd.
A Former Convenience Store Reimagined
The building once served as a convenience store. Rather than leaving it idle, the developers redesigned both its purpose and business model, transforming it into a revenue-generating accommodation. Converting commercial buildings into lodging facilities remains rare in regional Japan, and this project is being watched as a potential new model for repurposing underutilized properties in local communities.
Spacious Layout Shaped by the Original Structure
Because the building was originally a convenience store, it features an unusually open floor plan with wide aisles and high ceilings — characteristics that are difficult to achieve in a typical purpose-built hotel. A flat floor design and generous corridors make the space accessible and comfortable for wheelchair users and a wide range of guests.

Step Out of the Car and Straight into Your Room
Taking advantage of the ground-floor storefront layout, the hotel has minimized the distance between the parking area and the guest quarters — allowing travelers to go from car to private space in just a few steps. This design is particularly convenient for families with luggage or elderly guests.

Whole-Building Rental for Up to 12 Guests
The hotel is designed for group stays and family travel — a segment with strong demand, particularly from Europe and North America — and supports both short stays and extended visits in a "living-style" format. The fully equipped kitchen is ideal for preparing Hakodate's fresh local ingredients.

Designed with Breathing Room
The living area can comfortably accommodate large groups and wheelchair users, while three separate bedrooms allow multiple families to maintain their privacy. The overall design prioritizes a sense of ease and unhurried space.

Connecting with the Local Neighborhood
The Horai-cho area is home to long-established sushi restaurants, a popular Genghis Khan (lamb barbecue) eatery, and craft beer bars. Rather than simply visiting tourist landmarks, guests are encouraged to experience the everyday life of the neighborhood — a key part of what staying here is all about.
NEXUS Guest Privilege — A Craft Beer Welcome
Within walking distance of the hotel is a craft beer bar run by a local owner (BAR hanabi: Kura, 34-1 Horai-cho, Hakodate, Hokkaido). Guests staying at NEXUS HOTEL Hakodate can enjoy their first craft beer at a special rate — ¥600 instead of the regular ¥900 — during the post-check-in hours. The initiative, called "NEXUS Guest Privilege," is designed to encourage guests to step out into the neighborhood and connect with Hakodate's streets and people.
