La Baie, the French restaurant on the 5th floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka, has been awarded one Michelin star in the MICHELIN Guide Kyoto Osaka 2026, announced on April 23, 2026. This marks the restaurant's 9th consecutive year and 15th total time receiving the recognition.

Christophe Gibert, a native of Brittany, France, has served as head chef at La Baie for over 20 years. Grounding his approach in the techniques of Auguste Escoffier, he reinterprets classical French cuisine with contemporary inspiration, producing dishes that are as intricate as they are artful. The restaurant's extensive wine collection complements his refined cooking, with thoughtfully matched pairings consistently drawing praise from guests.

Gibert sources select ingredients from his home region in France while actively incorporating Japanese seasonal produce throughout the year, bringing together the gastronomic traditions of both countries in a dining experience that is uniquely his own.

Career Background

Before arriving in Japan, Gibert trained at a number of France's most distinguished establishments: La Table d'Anvers and Lucas Carton in Paris, the Sporting Club de Monte Carlo, and Le Chantecler at the Hotel Negresco in Nice — which held two Michelin stars at the time. These postings gave him deep grounding in the creative techniques of contemporary French cuisine.

He came to Japan in 2002 as sous chef at La Baie, and was appointed head chef in 2006. Since then, he has continued to develop original dishes that draw out the harmony of each ingredient.
