Chronos Gaia Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Kuriyama-cho, Yubari-gun, Hokkaido) opened a new sumo entertainment venue called "Sapporo Sumo-beya Entertainment – SAPPORO SUMO CLUB ENTERTAINMENT" on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The venue aims to serve as a tourist hub in Sapporo.
This sumo-show restaurant holds the unique distinction of being the only establishment in Japan officially endorsed by two former Yokozuna— the 63rd Yokozuna Asahifuji and the 70th Yokozuna Harumafuji.
Reservations are now being accepted online and by telephone.
Full-Scale Clay Dohyo
The venue features an authentic clay dohyo (sumo ring) located at the center and surrounded by guest seating. This genuine sumo ring is rarely accessible to the public, but visitors participating in the "Challenge Sumo" experience can actually step onto the real ring.
Contemporary Meets Traditional Design
The warm, wood-grain seating area incorporates quintessentially Japanese elements such as ukiyo-e prints and traditional New Year kites, creating an authentic Japanese atmosphere. A large monitor on the stage, combined with modern lighting and video technology, enhances the sumo show experience.
Three Meal Plan Options
All reservations include a traditional Japanese set meal called "gozen." Guests can choose from three different gozen options when making advance reservations, allowing them to select meals that best match their tour schedule and preferences.
The venue is operated by Chronos Gaia Inc., a Hokkaido-based company that also runs a hotel in Kuriyama-cho, Yubari-gun. With skiing being the primary attraction most people associate with Hokkaido tourism, recent concerns about climate change affecting winter snowfall have highlighted the need for year-round attractions. The new venue aims to create a landmark destination in Sapporo that can boost Hokkaido tourism throughout all seasons.
The establishment serves as a platform to share Japan's traditional culture with the world from Sapporo.
Location and Access
The venue is located in the "Minami 4 Nishi 2 Building," about a three-minute walk along National Route 36 from the famous "Nikka Whisky" sign intersection—one of Sapporo's well-known landmarks—situated directly above Susukino Station.
