April Fools' Day Comes to the Aquarium
April Fools' Day is the one day of the year associated with harmless jokes and lighthearted pranks. In Japan, it is popularly known as "the day you can tell a lie," though the original spirit of the occasion is really about sharing laughs together. Shimoda Floating Aquarium is embracing this theme with a special exhibition that highlights surprising "true or false" facts about sea creatures.
Explore the Aquarium and Enjoy Sea Creature Trivia
Does the porcupinefish really have 1,000 spines? The special exhibition tank will feature a live porcupinefish — the very creature whose Japanese name, "harisenbou," translates to "a thousand spines." Visitors are free to count the spines for themselves! Interpretation panels beside the tank will explore the truths and myths surrounding this fish in detail. Beyond the main exhibition tank, additional panels highlighting true-or-false trivia will also be placed throughout the sea creature gallery "Umimeguri" and the jellyfish exhibit room "Clarium." It is a great opportunity to observe the creatures in their natural state, pick up some fun facts, and bring those conversation topics home to share with family and friends.
Exhibition Period: March 20 (Friday) – April 5 (Sunday), 2026
Exhibition Location: Planning exhibit tank at the Clarium entrance
Exhibited Creature: Porcupinefish
