Shimoda Marine Aquarium Launches New "Large Tank Fish Watching" Snorkeling Program

A new hands-on program called "Large Tank Fish Watching" (大水槽おさかなウォッチング) launched on June 1 at Shimoda Marine Aquarium in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The program invites visitors to observe marine life from inside the aquarium's large tank aboard the Aqua Dome Perry, a moored ship that serves as one of the facility's signature attractions.

Observe Izu's Marine Ecosystem Up Close

The large tank inside the Aqua Dome Perry houses approximately 50 species and 10,000 specimens of fish, invertebrates, and seaweed found in the waters near the Izu Peninsula. Participants put on snorkels, masks, and life jackets and enter the tank to observe the marine life from within. At a depth of 6 meters, the experience gives the feeling of actually diving in the sea. Visitors can also hand-feed fish that swim up close. Diving staff accompany every session, making the program accessible even to those who are not confident swimmers.
