Yoshiki Mizuno's Vision: Delivering the Stories of Roastery Tokyo
In creating this collaboration, Yoshiki Mizuno shared his thoughts on the project, his longstanding relationship with Starbucks, and the potential he saw in Roastery Tokyo:
"The starting point of this project is quite simple. I've always loved coffee and have been a regular Starbucks customer. Through staff connections, we started talking with the Roastery Tokyo team about 'doing something together.' At our first meeting, they carefully explained how 'the coffee story is complete in this space' from roasting to serving, and how customer stories are born there. I was impressed by how the partners shared this with such bright expressions.
I thought, 'Rather than just doing something, could we turn this place's story itself into an experience?' So we decided to build the event around real stories from the partners.
We received far more episodes than expected, honestly more than we could choose from, but considering the duration that would allow for focused listening, we reluctantly narrowed it down to five.
For production, we created scripts, recorded narration, measured the rhythm of time, and layered the music. This time, the music isn't the main focus but rather exists to accompany the stories. If people who listen can leave thinking 'somehow, this place felt comfortable,' that would make me happiest. Valentine's Day as a 'day to connect with someone' also feels like it strongly resonates with the story of this project."
FIVE STORIES×ONE SOUND - Five Stories Refined as Narratives, Resonating Amid the Aroma of Coffee
Small moments that happened here. Brief words, glances, and silences exchanged in daily work. Tiny instants that quietly remained in someone's heart.
In this program, five stories are woven through narration and music, based on real episodes shared by partners working at Roastery Tokyo. During the narration, the music flows continuously without interruption, layering with the sounds of brewing coffee, the atmosphere filling the store, and the air moving through the space, forming one complete time.
Rather than speaking of extraordinary "love," this event shines light on gentle emotions within each person's daily life. In this place, with coffee, we offer a time to quietly share such feelings.
The Five Stories
- "Ah, a rainbow"
- "To the place where it all began, once more"
- "On the other side of the school route"
- "The form of gratitude"
- "I'm back"
Special Conversation: The Stories of Partners Creating the Deliciousness and Comfort of Coffee
At Roastery Tokyo, Yoshiki Mizuno engaged in conversation with Asumi Yamaguchi, the company's 19th Coffee Ambassador, and Naoko Kidota, Master Roaster. The dialogue began with simple yet fundamental questions: "Why did you enter the coffee world?" "What is deliciousness?" "What does it mean to work at this place?" Yamaguchi, who couldn't drink coffee in high school, now finds herself on the "delivering side." Kidota's daily commitment to quality in the quiet roasting workspace. And the Starbucks partner culture of mutual support that creates comfortable service and atmosphere. There are moments when a cup of coffee becomes more than just a beverage. Perhaps that's because of the "time" and "conversation" that accompany that cup. Experience the passion flowing through Roastery Tokyo's daily life, captured in words, on HIROBA's official website.
