Saga Tamaya Opens "Tamatera Aquarium," a Small Aquarium Inside a Traditional House in Downtown Saga

A small aquarium set inside a traditional Japanese house has opened in downtown Saga. "Tamatera Aquarium" is now open at TAMAYA TERRACE, a community hub built on the former site of Saga Tamaya's main building, and will run through Thursday, December 31, 2026.

Tamatera Aquarium is a "traditional-house mini aquarium" where visitors can sit back and relax while observing sea and river creatures up close.

Inside, beyond simply viewing the creatures, guests can enjoy explanations led by students from Saga University, as well as feeding and doctor fish experiences. Visitors can also take a break with tea and sweets, making it a place where people of all ages, from children to adults, can spend time in their own way. Open until 9:00 PM, the aquarium serves as a place for parents and children to learn and experience things together during the day, and a relaxed spot for university students and couples to unwind in the evening, creating a new kind of downtown Saga destination.

Creatures Up Close, Inside a Traditional House

Tamatera Aquarium makes use of a traditional Japanese house at TAMAYA TERRACE, the site of Saga Tamaya's former main building. Unlike a typical aquarium, visitors take off their shoes and step up into the house, allowing them to relax while watching the creatures. A variety of sea and freshwater creatures can be observed up close, and tea and sweets are also available inside.

Visitors can stop by while out shopping or exploring downtown, whether to watch the creatures, chat with family, or simply sit and take a break. Rather than just "seeing an aquarium," it's a small, downtown aquarium where guests can spend relaxed time alongside the creatures.

Three Ways to Enjoy It: Relax, Observe, and Experience

1. Relax While Seated

Take a seat, enjoy some tea and sweets, and unwind. Parents and children can watch the creatures at the same eye level and chat together, enjoying a calm, unhurried atmosphere unique to a traditional house, all while inside an aquarium.

2. Observe Creatures Up Close

Inside, visitors can observe sea and river creatures up close. Explanations from Saga University students also bring out discoveries and details easy to miss just by looking, such as what kind of creature it is or where it lives. The aquarium aims to be a place that sparks children's interest in living creatures and in the nature of Saga.

3. Experience Feeding and Doctor Fish

Beyond simply watching, hands-on experiences let visitors feel closer to the creatures. During the feeding experience, guests can watch creatures eat right in front of them. During the doctor fish experience, visitors can put their hands in the water and enjoy direct contact with the fish. It's an experience that broadens interest in living creatures for children and adults alike.

Different Ways to Enjoy It by Day and by Night

The tank lit up in the evening at Tamatera Aquarium

Tamatera Aquarium is open until 9:00 PM. During the day, visitors can take a close look at the creatures, take part in the feeding experience, and enjoy explanations from students, learning about the creatures while sharing the experience as a family.

In the evening, the tanks lit up in the surrounding light create a calmer atmosphere, a little different from daytime. It's a downtown "nighttime aquarium" that university students can stop by after class or on the way home from work, and that couples can visit on an evening out.

From a place for children to learn to a spot for adults to unwind, the changing atmosphere throughout the day is one of the pleasures of Tamatera Aquarium.

A Small Aquarium Built Together by Students, the Community, and an Aquarium

Tamatera Aquarium is run by four groups, each contributing its own strengths: Saga Tamaya; Green-Nexus, an officially recognized student group at Saga University; Sagatsuku!; and the zero-distance aquarium Ise Sea Paradise.

Saga Tamaya provides the location and its connection to downtown Saga, Green-Nexus contributes the creatures, student explanations, and educational content, Sagatsuku! handles planning, operations, and community coordination, and Ise Sea Paradise brings its expertise in exhibits, animal care, and aquarium know-how. Together, this collaboration between the community, students, and an aquarium is shaping an aquarium unique to this place.

About TAMAYA TERRACE

Saga Tamaya operates the site of its former main building, where a new main building is planned, as a community hub named "TAMAYA TERRACE," open for local residents to use in the meantime before construction begins.

Rather than leaving the site empty, Saga Tamaya aims to make it a place where people can gather and connect, generating new energy, and will continue to develop events and programs that contribute to revitalizing downtown Saga City.
