Tansu no Gen Co., Ltd., a furniture and interior e-commerce company based in Okawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, has released "Yame Matcha EN" as the sixth edition of its "Regional Specialty Redesign" project. This initiative focuses on reconstructing Kyushu's regional specialty products and delivering them to domestic and international markets.
About the Regional Specialty Redesign Project
The "Regional Specialty Redesign" project is an initiative by Tansu no Gen that aims to connect regions with national and global markets by redesigning attractive local specialty products for internet sales. Leveraging over 20 years of online retail expertise, the company has previously developed products such as the sake tasting set "KAWA," ice cream set "YAMA," and hamburger comparison set "CRAFT" featuring Hakata and Saga wagyu beef.
About Yame Matcha
Yame, one of Japan's premier tea-producing regions, leads the nation in gyokuro production with approximately 40% of the national market share. The region's fertile soil, climate that produces morning dew, and advanced covering techniques create tea with distinctive rich umami flavor.
This product uses only first-harvest tea leaves (ichibancha), which are rich in theanine and offer deep umami with minimal astringency and aromatic fragrance. This quality level is comparable to wine vintages or specialty coffee grades.
While Japan's top tea-producing regions by volume are Shizuoka, Kagoshima, and Mie, Yame City in Fukuoka Prefecture has consistently prioritized quality over quantity in tea production. The region ranks first in gyokuro production, thanks to its geography embraced by the Kyushu Mountains and its climate. Yame City's significant temperature differences between day and night, combined with frequent fog that acts as a natural curtain softening sunlight, create ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality tea leaves.
Matcha is produced from tea leaves grown under the same conditions as gyokuro, but differs in the manufacturing process after harvest. The tea leaves used in this product are exclusively first-harvest leaves picked in spring.
First-harvest tea (ichibancha) refers to the new shoots harvested first each year. These leaves are characterized by rich umami and sweetness, excellent aroma, and high nutritional value.
Yame Matcha "EN"
Matcha has long been associated with Japanese culture. Tea ceremony culture emerged during the Muromachi period, developed into the formal tea ceremony practice during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and today has gained popularity as a flavor in sweets and lattes.
The appeal of matcha has also spread internationally. In the United States, it's supported by health-conscious consumers as a superfood, while in Europe it receives high praise as a symbol of Japanese culture.
However, the origin and variety of tea leaves in matcha products are rarely emphasized. Matcha characteristics and flavors vary by region and type. The product was created to deliver truly delicious matcha with attention to these differences, and to improve Japan's matcha industry by communicating the characteristics of the production region and commitment to tea leaves, thereby spreading the true appeal of matcha.
"Yame Matcha EN" is created through collaboration among four companies: Green World Yame, a tea production and processing company with award-winning quality from national competitions, handles tea leaf cultivation; Kensho, equipped with cutting-edge processing technology, processes the harvested leaves into matcha; and JA Yame ensures strict quality control to deliver the product in optimal condition.
The product is available for purchase through the company's official website, Rakuten Market store, and Yahoo Shopping store.
