Japanese confectionery maker Colombin is releasing a Sendai-exclusive new product, "Sendai Date Sando," from September 18, 2026 (Friday), at Omiyage-dokoro souvenir shops inside JR Sendai Station, at Tohoku Meguri Irotoiro Sendai, and other locations.
"Sendai Date Sando" is a vanilla cream sandwich cookie developed with carefully selected local ingredients, inspired by the history and culture connected to the Date clan, lords of the Sendai domain. Following the popular "Sendai Moshio Galette," it is the maker's next sweet to use moshio (seaweed salt) from Shiogama City, making it a fitting choice for a travel keepsake or a gift for someone special.
The Thought and Care Behind "Sendai Date Sando"
Using Moshio Salt From Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, and Madagascar Vanilla
Committed to local ingredients for this Sendai-exclusive product, Colombin chose "Shiogama no Moshio," a seaweed salt connected to Shiogama Shrine, which also has deep ties to the Date clan, lords of the Sendai domain. The salt is made by filtering seawater through hondawara seaweed harvested off the coast of Shiogama, then simmering it in a kettle for more than ten hours while carefully skimming off impurities. The result is a mineral-rich salt with little bitterness and a mellow, refined flavor, which brings out the sweetness of the fragrant Madagascar vanilla. ("Shiogama no Moshio" is a registered trademark of Ganbare Shiogama LLC.)
Perfecting the Salty Flavor and Crisp Texture Through Repeated Testing
Aiming for a flavor balanced enough to make you reach for another, Colombin repeated countless trials to perfect the ratio of moshio salt. The rich vanilla cream is sandwiched between light, crisp cookies, and the mellow saltiness of the moshio spreads with every bite as a subtle accent.
An Upscale Package Featuring Date Masamune's Helmet and the Feel of Sendai
The package is finished in vivid blue with silver foil accents, conveying a dignified, upscale look. The crescent moon crest from Date Masamune's helmet is rendered in eye-catching yellow, making it stand out as a gift. The inside of the box depicts the Sendai Tanabata Festival, and the package is sized to be easy to carry.
