Hakata Ori Meets Everyday Life - Fukuoka Canvas and Hakata Ori Limited-Edition NABIKI Bag Launches at Furusatokan

Cultural Background of Hakata Ori and New Product Development

Hakata Ori is one of Japan's representative textiles, where techniques and aesthetics have been cultivated over a long period. Traditionally worn as obi (kimono sashes), it has accompanied people's movements and life milestones. However, with changing lifestyles, opportunities to experience Hakata Ori have gradually become limited. Against this backdrop, a new product development initiative aims to deliver Hakata Ori in a form that naturally integrates into contemporary lifestyles and can be used continuously across generations.

Project Structure and Production Partners

This project is part of Fukuoka City's "Traditional Industry Inbound Tourism Consumption Expansion Project," commissioned to Hakata Daimaru Kyushu Tankentai, with ORIO (Oritsugi Co., Ltd.) as the production partner responsible for planning and product development. ORIO has consistently reconstructed Japanese textile culture, centered on Hakata Ori, into products suited to modern lifestyles and delivered them sustainably to the market. The project aligns with the philosophy of creating products that are naturally used in daily life and continue to sell rather than being one-off initiatives, which led to ORIO's selection as the production partner.

About the Development Product "NABIKI"

NABIKI bag design close-ups

Combining durable canvas with Hakata Ori obi remnants individually paired for each piece, with sewing and finishing handled by Fukuoka-based Fukuhan Co., Ltd., the Made-in-Hakata bag "NABIKI" was born with material selection and specification design all conducted in Hakata. The motifs use remnant obi fabrics woven by Chikuzen Orimono and Oshiumi Orimono. The design reinterprets the "sway," "negative space," and "beauty of movement in the wind" of Hakata Ori, which has accompanied human movement as obi, into a form usable in everyday life. The 2-way specification as both handbag and shoulder bag allows the appearance and impression of Hakata Ori to change depending on how it's carried and what one wears, suitable for both Japanese and Western attire.

To convey the diverse expressions of Hakata Ori, the bags are organized into three categories according to pattern characteristics and impressions. "CLASSIC | KEI (Continuity)" values traditional structure and spirituality, "POP | ASOBI (Play)" lightly reconstructs the structural beauty of Hakata Ori, and "BLOOM | EN (Connection)" resonates with emotions and memories through colors and floral patterns. Each possessing a different character, all are one-of-a-kind pieces for enjoying Hakata Ori in daily life.
