New Release: MARONA Series for Japanese and Western Dishes

MARONA series

MARONA is a new tableware series from Hakusan Porcelain. These shallow bowls were designed with ease of use and form in mind, and they come from careful handwork by craftspeople and calculated sizing. They suit dishes across genres, from Japanese to Western cuisine. The series name is a coined word taken from the "mellow roundness" (まろやかな丸み) of the bowl's silhouette.

An Inner Curve That Is Easy to Scoop

The design leaves open space inside the bowl, so both Japanese and Western dishes look good when served. The moderately rounded sides let a spoon scoop food out cleanly.

A Structure That Resists Scratches When Stacked

When bowls of the same size are stacked, they overlap at the rim and the waist. The foot ring does not touch the inside of the bowl below directly, so stacking leaves no scratches.

A Comfortable Curve for the Table

The main feature of MARONA is the curve running from the rim to the foot ring. After a bowl is removed from the mold, a craftsperson shaves the roundness beneath the rim one piece at a time with a kanna (a shaving tool) to finish it.

The warm roundness and the feel in the hand cannot be achieved with plaster molds and machine forming alone. The extra step taken by craftspeople, who do not compromise on details, shapes the form.

Glossy white porcelain and two matte grays

The series comes in glossy white porcelain and two matte grays. The bowls can be matched in a single color, and combining different textures also comes together neatly.

Glossy White Porcelain and Matte Finishes: Three Textures to Choose From

For the color variations, a different texture was chosen for each color, taking into account how food looks and the balance of the whole series.

White porcelain (白磁)

The white is deliberately not matte and is finished in glossy white porcelain. It sets off the bluish white that is native to porcelain, as well as the shape of the bowl.

Gray matte (グレイマット)

A smooth texture with reduced light reflection. The light gray matte glaze gently brings out the colors of ingredients.

Charcoal gray matte (チャコールグレイマット)

A darker gray that is close to black yet feels warm, and that tightens the look of the table. It gives the table a modern appearance.

New Release: IROHANI Series of Small Bowls

IROHANI series

IROHANI is a series of small bowls (mamebachi, 豆鉢) that adds a touch of color and playfulness to the table. The new series combines 9 forms with 6 colors for a total of 54 variations.

The small bowls range from forms that suggest traditional beauty to sharp, modern shapes. They add an accent to everyday Japanese side dishes, and are suited to rare delicacies and condiments as well as make-ahead side dishes kept on hand (常備菜). The bowls can be chosen freely to match one's mood or menu.

A Size That Fits in the Palm

Each form condenses its own shape, such as the curve of the rim and the rise of the sides, into a size that fits in one hand.

Serving just a little food in a bowl adds an accent to the usual table. Arranging the bowls by freely combining colors and shapes is also part of the enjoyment of this series.

Six Colors for the Table

Six types of glaze bring out the shading and texture of each bowl. They are basic white porcelain (白磁); the traditional glazes celadon (青磁), a bluish-white glaze (青白釉), and iron red (鉄赤); a deep glossy navy (つや紺) that tightens the whole look; and canary yellow, which serves as an accent on the table.

The colors also work well when different ones are mixed and lined up together.

PRESSURE CASTING

Pressure casting is one of the methods used to form ceramics. The special exhibition shows plaster molds used in mass production, clay bodies, and other items, offering a closer look at how Hakusan Porcelain makes its products.

The exhibition is one that only a pottery maker's directly operated store can offer.

23rd Anniversary Gift: The "Kakuchu" Mini Stand

Each year, the design office at Hakusan Porcelain makes a special commemorative gift. This year's gift is a mini stand about 7 cm tall that can also be used as a pen stand or a mini vase. It is named "Kakuchu" (カクチュウ).

Design office staff make each piece by hand with their own touches, so the arrangement differs from piece to piece.
