Danish Furniture and Lighting Brand UMAGE Launches Japanese Website
UMAGE, a brand established in 2008, operates its showroom along Havnegade, a waterfront promenade in central Copenhagen, Denmark. Known for the natural beauty of wood materials and fresh original recycled fabrics, UMAGE has now officially launched in Japan. IL DESIGN secured the opportunity to become the Japan general distributor during Denmark's largest furniture festival, 3daysofdesign, held in June 2024. At the end of 2025, the Japanese website was released and sales have begun.

Lighting Products Coming Soon
The portable lamp "Asteria Move" seen in the Heart'n'Soul dining table display photos above can be easily charged via USB. Currently, the furniture collection is featured on the site, but this year, various lighting products including "Asteria Move" will be added, so please stay tuned.

"making an effort"

UMAGE means "to make an effort" in Danish. What they continuously strive to achieve is providing beautiful Danish design at affordable prices with high-quality materials and genuine environmental consideration.
Here are three key UMAGE points:
1. Multifunctional Design

UMAGE believes in furniture design that evolves with customers. Designs allow easy customization and changes of colors and fabrics to match changing preferences and needs, refreshing living spaces with minimal effort and resources.
For example, lampshades can be used interchangeably with pendant lights, floor lamps, table lamps, and wall lamps, eliminating the need to purchase new items for new spaces or needs. Reducing the number of items needed contributes to a more sustainable environment.
Many products feature USB charging, wireless charging, and storage functions, meeting the needs of efficient and adaptable living spaces.
2. Sustainability

The tambour doors on the Audacious series (side tables, highboards, desks) and the upholstery on the A Conversation Piece lounge chair are replaceable. Using recyclable parts extends furniture lifespan. The UMAGE original "Horizons" textile used for upholstery is made from 100% recycled polyester. Naturally discarded plastic is collected and processed into plastic flakes, from which polyester yarn is manufactured, creating soft and durable 100% recycled polyester fiber.
Additionally, most UMAGE designs are shipped flat-packed, optimizing transportation space and reducing CO2 emissions. Environmentally friendly materials are used, reducing Styrofoam and plastic waste.
Other initiatives include ensuring responsible timber sourcing through collaboration with NGO "One Tree Planted," using RDS-certified down that ensures animal welfare during manufacturing, and this year, 2026, UMAGE received "B Corporation Certification." This certification by B Lab proves that UMAGE meets rigorous social and environmental standards throughout its business operations.
3. Affordable Luxury

While Danish furniture and Scandinavian furniture often carry an image of very high prices, UMAGE strives to maintain competitive pricing. This makes Danish luxury accessible to everyone, allowing beautiful design to become part of homes.
CEO Jakob Nannestad says: "We wanted to create a sustainable concept of flexible, high-quality design where everyone could access beautiful, functional products inspired by Scandinavian design traditions at affordable prices."
— Thus "UMAGE" was born.
UMAGE's Effort Continues
Furthermore, in 2019, they implemented a reform reducing employee working days to four days per week, and this year, 2026, marks the 6th anniversary of this "4-3" system. By making Friday a holiday, this initiative refreshes everyone's lives and creates time for unleashing creativity, reflecting their sincere and bold efforts to achieve productivity improvements and efficiency reductions. In-house designer Anders Klem says:
"When UMAGE introduced '4-3,' it became clear that my workplace prioritizes employee well-being above all. This allowed me to commit even more strongly to the company's success."
Please come see their meticulous efforts dedicated to each piece of furniture and lighting in person.
