About the Exhibition

Shinjuku Takashimaya will present the "Kurihara Kanji Exhibition -THE CITY-."

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1993, Kurihara completed his studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts Education Laboratory in 2022. In the same year, he received the "Early Dawn Award" at the 70th Tokyo University of the Arts Graduation and Completion Works Exhibition, gaining recognition as one of the next-generation artists to watch. Using a unique technique that treats heat transfer sheets like paint, he creates collages by repeatedly layering photographs and digital images, vividly depicting modern urban landscapes.

The cities captured by Kurihara contain multiple layers—history, culture, nature, and people's lives. In recent years, physical urban spaces have been trimmed down through social media and re-edited through filters in virtual spaces, deepening their complexity. The cities, where the visible and invisible, reality and virtuality intersect and constantly change, can be seen as a manifestation of the contemporary world that surrounds us.

This exhibition showcases 27 new works themed on the cities of Shinjuku and Osaka, representing east and west Japan.
