Historic Detached Building at Nationally Designated Nishiyama Garden Restored to Former Glory

The city of Toyonaka is progressing with maintenance and restoration work on the nationally designated scenic beauty "Nishiyama Garden" and the nationally registered tangible cultural property "Nishiyama Family Residence" toward full public opening in fiscal year 2028.

These buildings and gardens, created in the Okacho residential area, a pre-war suburban housing development, are precious cultural properties that convey Toyonaka's history to future generations. With the completion of restoration work on the "Hanare" (detached building), part of the Nishiyama Family Residence, an opening ceremony will be held to commemorate its completion.

Going forward, the city will begin utilizing the detached building while continuing to maintain the entire Nishiyama Garden, designated as a national scenic beauty, creating more opportunities for citizens to experience its cultural value and charm.

The "Nishiyama Family Residence" was purchased in 1912 by Ushinosuke Nishiyama, who served as a branch manager for an ironware merchant in Minami-Horie, Osaka. In addition to the main building, he constructed a Western-style building and detached tea room. Later, in 1940, the "Nishiyama Garden," a residential garden centered on a karesansui (dry landscape) design, was created. These properties retain detailed remnants of pre-war suburban residences and represent an exemplary case of residential gardens along railway lines. For these reasons, the "Nishiyama Family Residence" was registered as a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2007, and in 2019, the "Nishiyama Garden" (including the buildings) was designated as a national scenic beauty.
