About A' Design Award & Competition
The A' Design Award & Competition is one of the world's largest international design competitions, based in Italy. Covering a wide range of fields including architecture, interior design, products, and services, entries are evaluated from multiple perspectives—not only aesthetic beauty, but also functionality, innovation, and contribution to society. The competition recognizes works that improve society and daily life through outstanding design.
OMO5 Hakodate
OMO5 Hakodate by Hoshino Resorts opened on July 6, 2024, as part of Hoshino Resorts' "OMO" brand of urban hotels designed to get guests excited about exploring city neighborhoods. The hotel is located a five-minute walk from Hakodate Station, adjacent to one of the city's historic entertainment districts.
The hotel's concept, "120% Hakodate," reflects an ambition to help guests experience everything the city has to offer—from early morning market visits to nighttime views from Mount Hakodate. Highlights include a breakfast buffet showcasing the port city's fresh seafood, a free-flowing natural hot spring bath called "Kohaku-iro no Yu" (Amber Water), guest rooms designed with Hakodate's character in mind, a shuttle bus exclusively for hotel guests, and the "Go-KINJO" neighborhood exploration service. The OMO Base communal lounge hosts a nightly "Local Rhythm Night – Yoru no Kagayaki Hakodate Hour," featuring stained glass illumination representing the colors of Hakodate and hand-cranked organ music.

Design Vision Behind OMO5 Hakodate
The hotel's interior design was created by Fumihiko Fujii, founder and representative director of Fun Co., Ltd. The project involved rebranding an existing hotel near Hakodate Station into an OMO property, incorporating extensions and renovations. Fujii centered the design around the "120% Hakodate" concept, weaving the city's distinctive identity throughout the space.
The entrance welcomes guests with a large stained glass artwork depicting Hakodate's iconic tourist attractions. In the OMO Base communal space, a hand-drawn "neighborhood map" highlights local sights and restaurants, while seating areas encourage guests to relax before heading out or after returning to the hotel.
OMO Dining's live kitchen is shaped like the star-patterned fortifications of Goryokaku, one of Hakodate's best-known landmarks. Pendant lights fashioned from fishing nets and squid-lure lamps recreate the lively atmosphere of Hakodate's fishing harbor. The extended dining hall brings a bright, open feel that contrasts with the lower-ceilinged original section, adding rhythm to the overall space. Artwork dyed with squid ink provides bold color accents in the seating area.
Guest room walls feature illustrations inspired by the night view from Mount Hakodate, and a subtle squid motif is hidden throughout the rooms—adding a playful local element to the guest experience.
