"Masters of Swedish Painting: From Nationalmuseum, Stockholm" is set to open at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in Nagoya from July 9 to October 4, 2026. Organized in full cooperation with the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the exhibition focuses exclusively on Swedish painting and features approximately 80 masterpieces from the late 19th to early 20th century.
In the late 1870s, young Swedish artists traveled to France to study Realism, Naturalism, and plein-air painting techniques. Over time, many grew drawn back to their homeland, turning their attention to the landscapes and everyday life unique to Scandinavia. Their paintings — filled with the quiet joys of daily life and the harsh yet beautiful natural world expressed with lyrical sensitivity — would go on to define what it means to paint "in the Swedish manner."
Highlights
1. 100% Swedish
All works on display are by Swedish artists. The natural beauty unique to Sweden, as well as a warm appreciation for everyday life, come through in each piece. Keywords such as "nature," "light," and "the radiance of everyday life" offer a way to trace the roots of the well-being lifestyle that characterizes modern Sweden.

2. Artists Who Forged New Forms of Expression
In the second half of the 19th century, Swedish painters sought subject matter that expressed their national identity, along with the means to depict it. Moving away from the Realism and Naturalism they had learned in France, they developed their own styles that prioritized personal emotion and lyrical atmosphere. The period from the 1880s to 1915 is referred to as the "Golden Age" of Swedish painting.

3. Swedish Painting Gaining Global Attention
In recent years, large-scale Swedish painting exhibitions have been held outside Sweden — in France, the United States, and elsewhere — drawing worldwide attention. Organized in full cooperation with the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, this exhibition features approximately 80 works from the Golden Age of Swedish painting. Among the featured artists are Carl Larsson, one of Sweden's most beloved national painters, and August Strindberg, known also as a playwright — both of whom have seen growing international recognition.

All works from the collection of the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
