Nekoyacho Building's 3rd Anniversary "Neko Matsuri" Brings a Record 27 Shops to Hiroshima on September 26

Nekoyacho Building in Hiroshima is holding its annual autumn festival, "Neko Matsuri," on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The event is organized by SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE, the architecture firm led by Makoto Tanijiri and Ai Yoshida that operates the building.

Nekoyacho Building is a multi-use complex built around the theme of "eating, working, and unwinding," which opened on September 23, 2023, and turns three this year. Neko Matsuri, the building's annual anniversary event held each autumn, returns for its third edition with a record 27 shops — restaurants, retailers, and makers from Hiroshima and beyond.

Among them are craft gelato shop TONPUKU from Tokushima, Tokyo restaurants Takarabune and Shumai Hanjo, and baked doughnut specialist HOCUS POCUS, also from Tokyo. A bakery collaboration will also bring together Fukuoka's popular Panstock Hakozaki Honten with Hiroshima's LUCKY BAKERY and Butti Bakery.

Beyond food and shopping, the day includes workshops, yoga, and sauna sessions not normally open to the public. Visitors can eat, drink, shop, create, play, and unwind while making their way through the building, discovering shops, people, and craftsmanship they might not otherwise encounter.

01 | Popular Shops From Across Japan Gather in Nekoyacho, Hiroshima

Once again this year, shops and makers from all over Japan — not just Hiroshima — will gather at Nekoyacho Building. Participants include craft gelato shop TONPUKU from Tokushima, restaurant Takarabune and baked doughnut specialist HOCUS POCUS from Tokyo, and cheesecake maker Sloth from Yamaguchi. Ehime, Tokyo, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Yamaguchi, Tokushima, and Hiroshima: shops and people active in each of these areas come together under one roof, creating encounters with flavors, goods, and people that are hard to find in Hiroshima on an ordinary day.

02 | Three Bakeries Together: Panstock Hakozaki Honten × LUCKY BAKERY × Butti Bakery

Fukuoka's popular bakery Panstock Hakozaki Honten joins Hiroshima's LUCKY BAKERY and Butti Bakery at Neko Matsuri. The collaboration lets visitors enjoy bread from all three bakeries — based in Fukuoka and Hiroshima respectively — in one place, making it one of this year's highlights for bread lovers.

03 | A Rare Welding Workshop by Kamo Craft

This year's Neko Matsuri isn't only about eating and shopping — there's also plenty to enjoy hands-on. Kamo Craft, which doesn't normally hold workshops, will run a welding workshop for the event. Other programs include a tea-whisking and latte-making experience with Kyoto's MATCHAMON and ornament-making with Sukima., offering activities that visitors of any generation can enjoy.

04 | Eat, Drink, Shop, Create, and Unwind: The Whole Building Becomes a Festival for a Day

Alongside the food stalls and shops, a pottery market brings together artists and homeware sellers, with pottery, general goods, secondhand books, furniture, and other items that add color to everyday life. Select shop This___, which drew a strong response last year, returns again, and visitors can also enjoy yoga with Studio 103 and a special session at the building's resident Hiki Stargazing Sauna. Rather than a single draw, part of the appeal of Neko Matsuri is being able to wander through Nekoyacho Building and spend the day at your own pace.

05 | Nekoyacho Building Turns 3: An Annual Autumn Festival That Connects People

Nekoyacho Building marks its third anniversary this year. Neko Matsuri is held once a year, both as a way of thanking everyone who has been involved with the space and as a chance for first-time visitors to get to know Nekoyacho Building. Shops and customers, Hiroshima and visitors from outside the prefecture, makers and the people who use what they make — by spending a day together in the same place, people who wouldn't normally cross paths meet, and new connections grow from there.

The Team Behind Neko Matsuri

Shops and people from all over Japan gather for Neko Matsuri, and the event is planned together by Nekoyacho Building's own Shashokudo, YOSHIO ICECREAM from Ehime, "gubigubi," run by wine selector Junichi Hirasawa, and Ai Yoshida, who oversees the building.

Shashokudo

A dining space on the first floor of Nekoyacho Building. For Neko Matsuri, Shashokudo joins YOSHIO ICECREAM, gubigubi, and etc.inc as the building-side team behind the festival.

YOSHIO ICECREAM

A craft ice cream brand built around the concept of "Setouchi craft ice cream," combining simple, nostalgic recipes that make the most of the Seto Inland Sea region's rich ingredients with a distinctive twist. At Neko Matsuri, too, its ice cream helps spark new connections between people and shops.

gubigubi

A "traveling wine bar" run by wine selector Junichi Hirasawa. Rather than running a fixed shop, gubigubi travels to different locations and serves wine suited to each place and the people who gather there. At every Neko Matsuri, it creates a space where people connect with one another over wine.

Ai Yoshida (SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE / etc.inc)

Ai Yoshida oversees Nekoyacho Building. Together with Shashokudo, YOSHIO ICECREAM, and gubigubi, she plans Neko Matsuri by bringing together each member's connections and ideas.

Shashokudo, based at Nekoyacho Building, and planning members working in different fields across Ehime, Tokyo, and Hiroshima each bring their own connections and ideas, linking shops, people, and makers from Hiroshima and across Japan to Nekoyacho Building. Neko Matsuri is not simply a market where many vendors gather — the new encounters and exchanges that grow out of the connections among the people who gather there are also an important part of what makes the festival special.

About Nekoyacho Building

SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE, an architecture firm based in Hiroshima and Tokyo, works across disciplines rather than simply waiting for commissions, aiming to create the spaces it genuinely wants to build and architecture that moves people. In recent years the firm has launched new ventures such as Shashokudo, BIRD BATH & KIOSK, and Zekkei Fudosan, handling everything from planning to operations.

Nekoyacho Building exterior

What the firm aims for is a "playground" where its own team can work with genuine excitement, and a place to experiment with space. It has also become a wellspring of creativity as the firm continues to explore its own way of working and a new model for a design office. In autumn 2023, Nekoyacho Building — a small mixed-use commercial building where diverse functions loosely connect from the first floor to the rooftop, built around the theme of "eating, working, and unwinding" — was completed in Nekoyacho, Hiroshima.

The building received the "Small Office of the Year" award at the FRAME AWARDS 2025.
