Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition AOMORI Opens in Aomori City for the First Time This July

The Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition AOMORI is set to run from July 11 (Saturday) to August 30 (Sunday), 2026, at the Tōō Nippō Shinmachi Building New's Hall (Shinmachi 2-2-11, Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture). This marks the first-ever Aomori venue for the exhibition.

The Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition is an immersive, hands-on digital art museum where visitors can step into the world of ukiyo-e across multiple three-dimensional projection spaces. The exhibition transforms over 300 works by world-renowned ukiyo-e artists — including Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku, and Utagawa Kunisada — into graphical digital art using 3DCG animation and projection mapping, making the experience enjoyable for all ages.

Past venues include Nagoya, Milan (Italy), Kagoshima, Tokyo, Taipei (Taiwan), Fukuoka, Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Osaka, and Paris (France), with over 500,000 visitors attending in total. The exhibition has also received the Excellence Award in the Project Division of the CJPF Award 2025, organized by the Cool Japan Public-Private Platform (Secretariat: Intellectual Property Strategy Promotion Office, Cabinet Office).

Photography and video recording are permitted throughout the venue, so visitors can capture their own images against the fantastical ukiyo-e backdrops.

In addition to digital exhibits, the exhibition also displays prints made during the Edo period alongside reproductions, and includes explanations of the history of ukiyo-e, Edo-period culture, and the lives of the artists themselves.
