About Misasa Onsen

Misasa hot spring town – inns lining both banks of the Mitoku River

Misasa Onsen has a history of over 850 years, dating back to the Heian period. According to legend, a warrior named Okubo Samanojo spared an aged white wolf he encountered, and that night the deity Myoken Daibosatsu appeared in his dream to reveal the location of the hot spring as a reward.

The spring is renowned for its exceptionally high radon content, making it one of the world's leading radioactive hot springs. Local lore holds that bathing three mornings in a row restores one's vitality — reflected in the name "Misasa" (三朝, literally "three mornings"). The waters are said to be effective for conditions including bronchitis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, gout, and fatigue recovery, among others.
